Textiles
In the early 1900’s, Japan was a leading
exporter of textiles, predominantly cotton textiles. After
World War II, Japanese export of textiles was severely curtailed
in the United States, and it became only a small percentage
of the Japanese export industry overall. These days the textile
exports from Japan consist mainly of Japanese clothing, particularly
vintage clothing such as authentic Japanese kimonos and shoes.
There
will always be a market, if small, for Japanese clothing, as
it is so unique and the designs can be
so intricate. Although
export of Japanese fabric and clothing may seem insignificant
in Japan’s overall export market, there will always be
some demand.
